Letter to Sadiq Khan: how the ULEZ zone may affect the night-time economy

20 May 2021

Head of Bectu, Philippa Childs has written to the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, about the ULEZ zone and the affect it may have on the night-time economy.

Improving air quality in London is a necessary and important priority, and the ULEZ will certainly tackle the problem. However, the policy raises several key issues for freelancers and casual workers, who may be unfarily penalised.

The cultural industries have suffered greatly at the hands of the pandemic, which hit it eight times as hard as the whole economy, leaving thousands of workers without employment and a steady income. The night time economy has been closed for over a year, and it needs support in its road to recovery, not measures that will hinder a successful reopening. ULEZ as a blanket policy does not work for freelancers and casual workers. We need a policy that works for all Londoners.
