Grow, Learn & Succeed with The Alfie Squires Bursary
Grow, learn, succeed – this is Bectu’s ethos. As well as workplace support, Bectu offers learning and training opportunities to equip members with the tools they need to thrive in all areas of the creative industries. As part of this work, Bectu offers members a chance to get financial support towards union-related training. The offer is called the Alfie Squires Bursary and in the past members have used it to fund training and even achieve diplomas. Now, theatre worker Alice Jessop is using it to fund a career support programme. Here’s her story, in her words:
I was super excited when I was found out I awarded an Alfie Squires Bursary. I’ve been using it to partially fund a career support programme I am on. The programme is aimed at underrepresented groups in the creative industries and the Alfie Squires Bursary has allowed me to take full advantage of it.
I have a mentor as part of the programme. Her name is Laura Woodward, she is a Creative Director and Co-CEO of an arts organisation. Her knowledge and guidance are helping me develop and build confidence in my work. Her support is invaluable and our sessions have been the best part of Thrive so far. I am building the skills and understanding I need for my career ambitions.
As well as working with my mentor, I’ve done training in leadership, finance and budgeting. As a result of the training, I now have a better understanding of business models, finance terminology and leadership. I have also identified my signature strengths and put what I’ve learnt into practice.
With the Alfie Squires Bursary, I also attended a masterclass ran by Arti Banerjee (theatre director), Minoli De Silva (Production Coordinator at National Theatre), Roy Williams (Playwright) and Rufus Norris (Artistic Director at the National Theatre). The masterclass was followed by a networking session where I met fellow theatre makers, expanded my network and discovered new and exciting projects. I look forward to the next training sessions and future masterclasses.
The Alfie Squires Bursary has, so far, helped me learn and develop my skills. I will use what I have learnt and look forward to learning more.
