Deeply concerning that Ministers are playing politics with Channel 4 appointments

14 April 2021

Responding to reports that the Government has blocked two Ofcom-approved reappointments to the Channel 4 Board of Directors, Head of Bectu Philippa Childs said:

“Ofcom is responsible for Channel 4 board appointments and it is deeply concerning that Ministers are playing politics and interfering with this process.

“It is especially troubling that Ministers have chosen to block two women, including one of only two women of colour. Of the remaining eight non-executive board members, seven are white men.

“The independence and impartiality of our public service broadcasters is of critical importance and it is crucial that Channel Four and Ofcom can make appointments free from political interference.”
