Bectu responds to DCMS Committee report into BBC Chairman appointment
Responding to the Digital, Culture, Media and Sports Committee’s report into the appointment of Richard Sharp as Chair of the BBC, Head of Bectu Philippa Childs said:
“It is now impossible to ignore the untold damage the continuing revelations and speculation surrounding Mr Sharp’s appointment is having on the BBC’s reputation. It’s inevitable it will be even further damaged the longer this drags on.
“Bectu members do incredible work every day to make the BBC a respected public service broadcaster and are held to stringent impartiality rules. Mr Sharp must consider the very real and detrimental impact his lack of transparency has had and will continue to have on trust in the BBC, and consider his position.
“The public deserve answers and it is imperative that the Government insists upon a prompt conclusion to the Commissioner for Public Appointments’ review, and that the findings are published immediately. The continuing controversy around the appointment of the BBC Chairman is causing untold damage to the BBC and undermining public faith in the appointments process.”
