Bectu responds to Cinderella cancellation announcement

3 May 2022

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella musical has announced its West End run will close early, with the final performance set for 12 June 2022.

Responding to reports that some staff working on or due to start with the production first heard the news via media reports or social media, Head of Bectu Philippa Childs said:

“This news and the way in which some workers first became aware of it is devastating for our members and all actors, musicians and staff associated with the production.

“Production and venue crew have faced countless challenges, setbacks, loss of income and changes to their employment terms and conditions over the last two years, and have admirably and tenaciously supported the industry through unprecedented times.

“To now hear of a loss of current or future employment via the news or social media, over a bank holiday weekend, is unacceptable and Bectu stands in solidarity with everyone impacted by the announcement.

“We have long called for a reset of the theatre industry to address its poor terms and conditions. This latest announcement makes it clear urgent change is needed to modernise the industry, create fairer working conditions, re-balance working lives and safeguard the future of the industry.”

Bectu has been in touch with members working on the production and is providing support to ensure their contractual obligations are met following the announcement.
