Bectu recommends improved redundancy offer from ENO

2 February 2024

Following months of negotiations over proposed redundancies, Bectu is pleased to have reached an amicable settlement with English National Opera (ENO).

In October 2023, ENO proposed a number of changes to contracts, hours and salaries amidst ongoing financial difficulties, including post-pandemic recovery and conditions attached to funding from Arts Council England.

Bectu entered negotiations with ENO management regarding these proposals and has beensupporting affected members working in technical roles such as lighting and props.

ENO has now improved its offer and the union is balloting its members on the revised proposals, which Bectu recommends members accept.

Bectu will continue to engage with ENO regarding the company’s planned move to Greater Manchester, and the impact on Bectu members.

Head of Bectu Philippa Childs said:

“Bectu members and all those employed at ENO have faced an incredibly challenging and anxious time in the wake of brutal funding cuts, unconfirmed relocation plans and continued uncertainty.

“Throughout negotiations with ENO, we were focused on getting the best deal possible for our members in very difficult circumstances, and we’re really pleased that ENO has met our demands and that we can recommend the improved offer.”
