BBC annual report: Bectu will fully engage with the BBC on reduction of roles working in public service
Responding to today’s publication of the BBC’s annual report, Head of Bectu Philippa Childs said:
“Bectu members, whether BBC staff or contractors do brilliant work every day, and their professionalism and excellence add so much to the creative and social fabric of the UK, as evidenced by today’s annual report.
“However, the BBC has had to make difficult financial decisions necessitated by the previous government’s decision to freeze the licence fee, leading to cuts to both jobs and services.
“We know this will be an uncertain time for many of our members. Bectu will continue to fully engage with the BBC on its plans to reduce the number of roles working in public service, to minimise the impact wherever possible.
“Ultimately, the choices the BBC makes are determined by the funding available, and the annual report and planned job losses reinforce the need for a licence fee that keeps pace with inflation and enables long-term planning and stability.
“It’s been heartening to see the new government’s recognition of the BBC as a global asset. We will continue to make the case for a robust funding model that allows the BBC to continue to deliver for the nation and its workforce.”
