The next PM will have no say in reckless plans to slash services, and no mandate to carry it out

20 October 2022

Prospect has responded to news that the Prime Minister will resign and trigger a Conservative leadership election.

At the same time it has been reported that departments are being asked to outline tens of billions of pounds of spending cuts to the Office of Budget Responsibility by tomorrow (Friday 21 October). This comes ahead of the government’s fiscal event on Monday 31 October.

Mike Clancy, Prospect general secretary, said:

“The Conservative Party may be glued to the world’s worst pantomime but huge decisions are supposed to be being made this week about tens of billions of pounds of public spending cuts.

“The next Prime Minister will have had no say in this reckless plan to slash our public services, and no mandate from the public to carry it out.

“The public will be left fearing for the future of their services, and public servants are being set up to pay the price for a disaster made entirely in Downing Street.”
