No review of AI legislation can be effective without proper consultation with unions and workers

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has given a speech outlining the UK’s approach to AI, and how it plans to mitigate the risks, and boost the opportunities from the technology.

What was missing from the speech, though raised in the subsequent press conference, was the direct negative impact on jobs and on the workplace.

Andrew Pakes, Prospect Deputy General Secretary, said:

“The rate of advancement in AI and its use far outstrips government attempts to regulate it.

“AI brings with it opportunities for better work but it also threatens jobs and has the potential to exacerbate prejudices in recruitment and disciplinary processes.

“No review of AI legislation can be effective without proper consultation with unions and workers who will be affected by any changes. The UK has an opportunity to influence the world of work globally but only if it leads the way in involving workers in the decisions that will affect them in the coming years.”
