Head of Bectu recognised in Variety International Women’s Impact Report 2022
Head of Bectu Philippa Childs has been selected to appear in Variety magazine’s International Women’s Impact Report 2022, ‘Women That Have Made an Impact in Global Entertainment’. The report salutes women and their accomplishments in honour of International Women’s Day on 8 March.
Childs joins a host of influential women from across the globe, spanning the creative and business sectors and including Oscar and Emmy winners, as well as streaming executives and producers creating entertainment for audiences from South Korea to the UK and beyond. The report celebrates their accomplishments over the past year as well as advice for women working in the creative sector.
The report highlights Bectu’s recent collaboration with BBC File on Four to survey members about their experiences with bullying and harassment. The survey results proved shocking, prompting Bectu to issue its ‘6 demands’, clear recommendations to the industry to help address this endemic problem. The recommendations include calling for safeguarding officers on all productions, a clear policy for dealing with complaints across the industry, and an external reporting body to look at historical complaints or serial offenders.
Head of Bectu Philippa Childs said:
“I am hugely proud, on behalf of all Bectu representatives, staff and colleagues, to be recognised in this impressive list for our collective work supporting members through the pandemic and trying to bring lasting change to the creative industries.
“It has been incredibly humbling and inspiring to witness the resilience and creativity of members in the face of significant hardships imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly the many workers who fell between the cracks of government support programs.
“The UK has an incredible amount of creative talent and we are proud to do our bit to make the industry a better place for women to thrive and succeed.
“Whether campaigning for more realistic working hours and equal pay, addressing the endemic problem of bullying and harassment or promoting more flexible working like job sharing, unions are trying to change the industry to better support women in the workforce. I encourage all women working in the creative industries to not only join but play an active part in their union.”
