Government must stop moving the goalposts for culture and publish the evidence

24 June 2021

Bectu fully supports the legal action taken by the theatre and live events industry today and has called on the government to show the same willing to reopen culture venues as it has to host Euro 2020.

Head of Bectu Philippa Childs said:

“Theatres and the live events industry were the first to close and look set to be the last to reopen. We fully support legal action to force the publication of the Events Research Programme findings and share in the increasing frustration that the government is sitting on the results.

“The sector has repeatedly shown it is willing to do whatever it takes to ensure safe performances, and has demonstrated this in pilot schemes and in the brief period they reopened last autumn.

“The flexibility shown for Euro 2020 has evidenced that where there is a will there is a way – we call on the government to stop moving the goalposts for culture and act with consistency across the economy.”
