COVID-19: Government must do more to support workers

17 March 2020

Prospect has argued that more needs to be done to support workers through the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Tuesday evening the government set out a package of economic measures to help businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In response Prospect general secretary Mike Clancy said:

“The package of support announced by the Chancellor today will help to alleviate the pressures on some businesses and keep workers employed and financially secure and that is welcome.

“But this has to be just the start of the government action and it is clear that some sectors, for example aviation, need direct support immediately to avoid disaster.

“The government says they will do whatever it takes and that simply has to include direct grants to businesses and to self-employed workers, not simply loans and tax reliefs.

“I hope the Chancellor is serious about wanting to work with trade unions and we stand ready to work with government to deliver the measures that are needed to protect workers and the economy through this crisis and beyond.”
