Budget a missed opportunity to meet the generational challenges facing our country

15 March 2023

Today’s Budget was a missed opportunity by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt to address the challenges facing our country, says Prospect.

Mike Clancy, General Secretary of Prospect Union, responding to today’s Budget, said:

“Today’s Budget was a missed opportunity to meet the generational challenges facing our country. From the cost-of-living to energy security, warm words were a fig leaf for lacklustre action.

“There was no plan to bring an end to the real terms pay cuts endured by Prospect members, who walked out today in their biggest numbers in a decade. There was no British equivalent of President Biden’s transformative Inflation Reduction Act to provide much needed good, green jobs across the UK. There was no reassurance on the future of the Type-32 programme that is critical to securing the future of British shipbuilding.       .

“Far from being a Budget for Growth, this was a Budget demonstrating a lack of ambition for the people and the industries that have the potential to get the British economy growing again.”
