Bectu seeks BAME workers’ views on how to improve diversity in creative industries

8 July 2020

Bectu is inviting Black, Asian and minority ethnic people in the creative industries to share their thoughts on what needs to happen to achieve change for the better.

The union’s newly formed Black Bectu Network has launched a Thought Exchange poll seeking responses to the question “What one thing do you think would improve the position of BAME workers in the creative industries?”

Respondents can share their thoughts here.

The Thought Exchange is open to all BAME people – whether members of the union or not – who work in film, television, theatre, live events and the arts.

The tool enables participants to provide their own thoughts on the question posed, and rate others’ replies. All thoughts and contributions are anonymous and participants’ information is kept confidential.

Report diversity figures to unions

Meanwhile more than 200 theatre industry professionals wrote an open letter to British theatre employers last week calling on them to commit to a number of measures as a signal of their intent to create anti-racist workplaces.

One of the demands was for employers to seek out diverse teams across all departments, truly representative of Britain today, and to report the figures around this annually to Bectu and Equity representatives.

Bectu’s Black Members’ Network was launched at the end of June as a safe place for BAME people in the creative industries to share their experiences and thoughts about how to address racism in the workplace and make positive change.

Those signing up will receive information about campaigns and invitations to meetings and events.

There is a dedicated web page and the email for Bectu members to join is [email protected]
