Bectu responds to UK Government Energy Bill Relief Scheme
Responding to the UK Government’s Government Energy Bill Relief Scheme announced today, which will provide a discount on wholesale gas and electricity prices for all UK businesses, Head of Bectu Philippa Childs said:
“While encouraging news, the Government’s energy support package doesn’t provide the long-term security and stability the creative sector so badly needs. The energy crisis has been building for months, threatening to cripple businesses and venues, with devastating knock-on effects for workers – many of whom are only just returning to stable employment following the impacts of the pandemic and post-Brexit EU touring restrictions.
“Capping energy costs will help give the creative sector, and those who work in it, some certainty during a difficult winter, but what happens in March when the cap expires? The creative industries urgently need a targeted, flexible, sustained support plan to safeguard the sector and its jobs beyond the next few months.”
