Bectu responds to Ofcom Chair announcement

Responding to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport’s announcement of a preferred candidate for the role of Ofcom Chair, Head of Bectu and Prospect Deputy General Secretary Philippa Childs said:

“We call on the Secretary of State to end the speculation about the Ofcom Chair and confirm the appointment as soon as possible. This role is fundamental to a healthy and robust communications landscape and impartial direction will be critical to create a regulator fit for the future.

“Rigorous, independent broadcasting has never been more important and as the sector faces a host of challenges around diversity and equality, funding models and a critical skills shortage, we need strong, decisive leadership to help make the industry the best it can be.

“We look forward to fruitful engagement with the new Chair to help tackle these issues and uphold a world-renowned communications sector.”
