Bectu LGBT+ Committee

Bectu LGBT logoBectu is committed to ensuring people from all backgrounds, including those who are LGBTQ+, have the same opportunities as everyone else and are able to work effectively, free of discrimination, bias, bullying and harassment. Homophobia and transphobia undermine inclusive societies and spawn prejudice and hate. Despite considerable progress, there is still a long way to go.

What is the Bectu LGBT+ Committee?

The LGBT+ Committee aims to be at the forefront of BECTU’s campaign to develop, improve and progress the equality and rights of LGBTQ+ members. The term LGBT+ is intended to be inclusive terminology and refers, but is not limited to, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, non-binary, intersex and asexual people.

The Committee comprises of Bectu members representing each Division of the Bectu Sector of Prospect, who meet quarterly. For more info on how Bectu is governed please see this page.

What does the Committee do?

One of the committee’s roles is to act as a forum where workers can raise any concerns they may have about discrimination in the industry and do so in a secure and supportive environment. The committee aims to:

  • support LGBTQ+ members who wish to become more active in BECTU and to work with BECTU at a national and divisional level on recruitment, retention and industrial campaigns;
  • advise BECTU members and officials on issues affecting LGBTQ+ members;
  • develop awareness of issues affecting LGBTQ+ members at every level of the union and in the industries in which BECTU organises;
  • encourage the involvement and participation of LGBTQ+ members in BECTU’s activities, and to promote the widest possible access to the union and its activities;
  • make recommendations on how the union may better fulfil its duties towards LGBTQ+ members both as a campaigning trade union and as an employer;
  • liaise with LGBTQ+ workplace networks to understand better issues facing workers within their workplaces and to provide training and campaigns accordingly
  • offer support to branches to help embed LGBTQ+ or equality reps into branches to ensure that work being done by the committee is embedded within branches & to ensure branches can feed into the work of the Sector.

Additionally, the Committee works with the Prospect LGBT+ Network and Prospect Pride Working Group to ensure representation in Pride events locally and nationally to show our strength and support, as well as having representation on the TUC (Trades Union Congress) LGBT+ Committee, and delegates at the TUC LGBT+ Conference.

How can I get involved?

The LGBT+ Committee is a voice for all members and welcomes involvement from across Bectu, whether you identify as LGBTQ+ yourself or you want to campaign with us as an ally. Alongside formal committee meetings, the LGBT+ Committee holds regular meetings open to all members. Trade Unions and solidarity with LGBTQ+ people

The film Pride is a great representation of how members of the LGBT+ community, specifically the group LGSM (Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners), came to the aid of trade unionists in the 1980’s and how this led to a more inclusive union movement and a change in legislation. We’re proud that David Donovan, until recently a Bectu Official, was a key part in bringing together Welsh miners and LGSM. David Donovan is portrayed in the film by Paddy Considine; it’s well worth a watch. The LGBT+ Committee thank Dai for everything he’s done at Bectu and wish him a happy retirement.
