Bectu Vision short courses support the training needs of freelance film and television practitioners in Scotland, with a focus on scripted production.

We aim to make Scottish film and television workplaces safer, fairer and greener while developing a skilled and supported workforce.

Our training courses are funded by Scottish Union Learning and provided free of charge to freelance film and television practitioners based in Scotland. Places are allocated via an application process with priority for BECTU Members.  Not a member yet? Join today!

  • Finance For Freelancers: The essential course for every freelancer – this course will take you through everything you need to know to manage the business side of your freelance career in the film & TV industry.
  • Team Engine: Join Jono from Team Engine as we’re talked through how to set up; onboarding; crew offers and contracting; timecards; and GDPR for production and accounts.
  • On Set Updates: Join 1st AD and app designer Alex Currie-Clarke as we’re talked through the digital callsheet app, providing your team with real-time updates direct from set with notifications via email, mobile and browser; and create and distribute wrap reports at the end of the day with the click of a button.
  • Team Crowd Tracker: Former AD and Team Crowd Tracker owner, Alana Hughes will talk us through a centralised Crowd/SA online booking and chit system, providing the potential to streamline your AD, SA and Accounts workload.

  • Practical Accredited (Childrens) Regulations Training: A City & Guilds accredited course to set new standards in the care, excellence & regulatory compliance for those working with children in Film & TV
  • 1 Day Costume Dye and Breakdown: Learn the basic techniques of costume dyeing and breakdown for film & television.
  • Risk Management of Productions: Understand why Risk Management is needed in production and learn practical methods of how it should be tackled.
  • Getting to Grips: Information & hands-on experience for Grip Trainees with key pieces of kit including track, tripods, and dollies.
  • Practical Risk Assessment Coaching: Coaching session embedding the principles of Risk Assessment through a mix of practical exercises, discussion, and feedback.
  • Working with Intimacy Coordinators: Address the uniquely challenging area of production in Film & TV drama to improve crew and cast safety & comfort on set.
  • Script Editing & Development with John Yorke: Explore the basic elements common to all drama & their application in different genres in this 2-day course.
  • TV Research Skills: Learn the skills needed to be a first-rate researcher.
  • Reset Your Relationship with Your Phone: Improve your digital wellbeing, tame annoying notifications, and know how to keep your phone safe from cyber criminals (no technical knowledge needed to take part).
  • Manual Handling Awareness: Gain an understanding of regulations, practical knowledge of lifting and moving, identify potential hazards and determine the safest manual handling method without injury.
  • Good Energy Stories: Learn easy and exciting approaches to weave climate into any storyline across every genre in entertaining and artful ways.
