Letter to the new Culture Secretary

21 September 2021

Head of Bectu, Philippa Childs, has written to the new Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Nadine Dorries, congratulating her on her new appointment and outlining the key issues that the culture industries currently face.

The creative industries are an essential aspect of the social fabric of the UK, home to highly skilled creative workers whose talents are recognised across the globe. It is imperative that the Culture Secretary works with us to protect such a valuable sector and support the industry in its post-pandemic recovery.

Bectu would be grateful for DMCS’s support in the following areas:

  • Sustaining the commitment to tackle bullying and harassment in the creative industries
  • Supporting workers and businesses until the end of covid interruptions
  • Supporting the heritage sector and protecting of the UK’s museums and galleries
  • Acting as the voice in Cabinet of freelancers and the self-employed
  • Working with the creative industries to support a thriving British industry
  • Supporting our touring professionals
