I have recently become self-employed: what am I entitled to?

Last updated: 15 Mar 2021

Eligibility for the SEISS has changed for the recently announced fourth grant. The scheme is now open to those who became self-employed during the 2019/20 tax year and filed their 2019/20 tax return by 2 March 2021.

Anyone who commenced self-employed activities after 6 April 2020 is therefore excluded from the fourth SEISS grant. Full eligibility criteria for the fifth grant have not yet been published.

If this means you don’t qualify for the SEISS, you may be eligible for Universal Credit, which is not generous and involves a means-test, but is still worth applying for.
