How does furlough affect my holiday entitlement and holiday pay?

Last updated: 25 Nov 2020

While you are furloughed, you continue to accrue holiday entitlement as usual. Your employer can require you to use your entitlement during periods of furlough, but the normal rules around this apply.

These rules are that if your employer wants you to use your holiday at a particular time, they must give you notice equal to double the length of the holiday time they want you to use (e.g. two days notice for one days holiday). The notice period can be reduced if you agree to do so.

Any holiday time you take during a period of furlough must be paid at your normal rate of pay, not your furlough pay, even if that means your employer has to top up the CJRS grant they receive from the government.
