Producer Development Programme 2022

Bectu Vision’s Producer Development Programme (PDP) provides support for those with the potential to become Scotland’s high-end television Producers of the future.

The programme combines short course training, networking and a year-long pairing with an independent production company which will equip the participants with the knowledge, confidence and connections to move into the role of scripted television Producer.

The 2022 programme is targeting senior film and television practitioners and experienced theatre and live events producers with the drive and commitment to take their next steps towards producing television.

Overview

The programme has been designed provide support which is tailored to reflect the skills development requirements of each participant.

Training Courses

There will be a focus on script development skills with a 2-day training course and ongoing coaching with Script Consultant, John Yorke and insight on the commissioning process will be gained through sessions with senior staff from the broadcasters. Training will be given on leadership, management and communication skills, safe management of productions and equalities diversity and inclusion.

Connections

The programme will introduce participants with a variety of independent production companies and commissioners from across the UK to develop understanding and create a network of contacts. Participants will also attend the Edinburgh TV Festival to further build their contacts.

Indie Pairing

Each participant will be paired with an independent production company for one year. This ‘Indie Pairing’ will enable the participant to apply their learning in a practical environment, observe the producer’s role from greenlight to delivery and build a relationship with their host company.

  • is designed to be flexible to fit around the ongoing work commitments of participants
  • offers drop in access to observe producers at work during all stages of the production process including castings, script meetings, shoots and post sessions
  • includes ongoing dialogue with the host company’s Head of Production
  • provides an opportunity to build a relationship with the host company

Participants will work closely with the project manager and host company to identify key areas for development and will receive additional training and support to address individual skills gaps.

The participants will:

  • Develop their understanding the terminology and methodology of story and script development for television
  • Gain a clear understanding of the production processes required by a producer and considerations involved in Producing television drama including commissioning and business affairs
  • Develop their skillset relating to the producer’s role in television and the importance of good leadership and management.
  • Build connections and a relationship with independent production companies to enable them to be considered for future drama producer roles within Scotland.

Requirements

This programme is aimed at experienced professional who are ready to take the next step in their career towards producing television. Applicants should be based in Scotland and have:

  • A minimum of 8 years’ experience in as EITHER
  • a film or television Head of Department
  • or a Theatre or Live Events Producer
  • Have a passion for drama and creating scripted production.
  • A good knowledge and understanding of the television drama landscape in Scotland and the wider UK.
  • The ability to generate original and creative ideas.
  • A high level of organisational and communication skills.
  • Experience of complex project management
  • Familiarity with employment practices and policies such as those relating to diversity, equal opportunities and health and safety or the ability to acquire this knowledge quickly.
  • A good awareness of key-creative organisations and individuals working in Scotland and UK-wide.

Producer Development Programme 2020

Producer Development Programme 2018/19

The first edition of the Producer Development Programme in 2018/19 supported four Line Producers to step up to Producer. We were proud to support our participants Wendy Griffin, Bovy MacKinnon, Suzanne Reid, and Michael Wilson.
