Bectu’s key role in film and TV industry highlighted in return to work guidance

1 June 2020

Bectu’s key role in the film and TV industry has been highlighted through its involvement in almost every single piece of guidance dealing with the sector’s return to work plans.

Bectu is one of a handful of organisations that has been involved in the guidance for three separate pieces of guidance relating to high end film and TV productions, UK broadcasters and VFX and post-production.

Guidance for film and high-end TV drama and safe working in post-production and VFX have been released on 1 June. They come after broadcaster guidance was issued in May.

Bectu has been heavily consulted on all of these documents which are designed to be the framework for the entire industry to go back to work safely.

Pan-industry discussions with organisations such as the British Film Commission, the BFI, Pact and ScreenSkills have led to the documents being launched so productions and crew have a set of uniform guidance to refer to as they get back to work.

Bectu has also produced an extremely detailed 90 page document which is provides further detail for specific departments and crew working in film and high-end TV.

Members have been consulted for each of the documents and will continue to be consulted as work starts up again. Bectu will also be offering training and information sessions for members to develop a deeper understanding of how they can return to work and what is likely to change on set.

Bectu national secretary Spencer MacDonald said:

“Being able to deliver a guidance which provides a uniform set of standards for productions to follow is a huge achievement.

“Our members’ voices and views have been absolutely crucial in the process. Now that the guidance has been issued we will continue to work with employers and the wider industry to ensure that things work can resume as smoothly as possible.

“The industry is now entering a period of planning for work to resume. We know there are many questions still to be answered and that members’ experiences will remain crucial to how productions continue to adapt to operating in this new climate.”
